Thousands of residents have been displaced after torrential seasonal rainfall triggered severe flash flooding across Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, submerging homes, businesses and major roads. The flooding left many families temporarily homeless and caused widespread damage to property.
Among the worst-hit areas were Abak Road, Ewet Housing Estate, Ikot Ekpene Road, Aka Itiam Street, Uwah Street, Nung Obio Enang, Tabernacle Road and several adjoining communities. Residents were forced to evacuate as floodwaters swept into homes, destroying household belongings and cutting off access to parts of the city. Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), carried out rescue operations, including the evacuation of a family trapped in the floodwaters.
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno described the flooding as unfortunate and called for stronger collaboration between the Federal Government, corporate organizations and residents to address the state’s recurring flood challenges. He said the government had deployed construction firms and relevant agencies to desilt blocked drainage channels and restore access to affected communities while urging residents to stop dumping refuse into drains.
The incident has renewed concerns over urban drainage infrastructure in Uyo, with many residents appealing for long-term flood control measures as the rainy season continues. Authorities have also advised residents to heed weather warnings and relocate from flood-prone areas whenever necessary.
