Switzerland produced a disciplined display to defeat Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver, securing their first FIFA World Cup knockout victory in 88 years and booking a place in the Round of 16.
Breel Embolo gave the Swiss an early lead in the 10th minute after being set up by impressive youngster Johan Manzambi, before Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage just after halftime to seal a comfortable victory. The result ends a decades-long wait for Switzerland’s first World Cup knockout win since 1938 and keeps alive their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.
Having topped Group B without losing a match, Switzerland once again showcased their tactical discipline. Captain Granit Xhaka dictated play from midfield, while Manzambi continued his breakout tournament with another influential performance, creating the opening goal and constantly troubling the Algerian defence. Coach Murat Yakin praised the youngster’s versatility and composure after the match.
Algeria enjoyed long spells of possession and pushed for a way back into the contest, with captain Riyad Mahrez leading the attack, but they struggled to break down Switzerland’s organised back line. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer was rarely troubled as the Swiss comfortably protected their clean sheet.
For Algeria, the defeat brings an end to a memorable World Cup return after progressing beyond the group stage for the first time since 2014. Head coach Vladimir Petkovic admitted his side paid heavily for costly defensive mistakes but said he remained proud of the team’s overall performance during the tournament.
Switzerland will now face either Colombia or Ghana in the Round of 16 as they look to continue their historic World Cup run and move one step closer to a first-ever modern-era quarter-final appearance.
