Outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey should England defeat Argentina in their semi-final, making it one of his final official engagements before leaving office. Reports indicate Starmer intends to fly to MetLife Stadium on Sunday and return to the UK in time for his final morning in Downing Street before handing over power next week.
Starmer announced his resignation as Labour leader in June and is expected to be succeeded by Andy Burnham, who is due to formally assume the role of Prime Minister after the leadership transition.
As a lifelong football fan and Arsenal supporter, Starmer has remained closely involved throughout England’s World Cup campaign, previously intervening over scheduling issues and even suggesting a national bank holiday if the Three Lions lift the trophy.
The prospect of Starmer ending his premiership at the World Cup final has generated mixed reactions. Supporters see it as a fitting farewell for a football-loving leader, while critics have questioned the potential cost of the trip to taxpayers during a period of economic pressure. England must first overcome Argentina to book a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.
