Arsenal defender William Saliba could be sidelined for up to five months after reports revealed he played the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a fractured back, an injury he had been managing for weeks before France’s campaign ended. The French international is now expected to undergo surgery, raising concerns over Arsenal’s defensive options ahead of the 2026/27 season.
According to reports from L’Équipe and RMC Sport, Saliba suffered the injury during Arsenal’s domestic campaign but continued playing through pain with the help of daily treatment and painkillers.
He remained a key figure for France throughout the tournament before aggravating the problem during the semi-final defeat to Spain, forcing him off early. After leaving the pitch, television cameras captured him saying, “My back is gone.”
Medical specialists are now leaning towards surgery, which could keep the 25-year-old out for four to five months, potentially ruling him out until late 2026 or early 2027. Arsenal are reportedly assessing their defensive depth, with manager Mikel Arteta expected to rely on Gabriel Magalhães, Ben White, and potential new signings if Saliba’s recovery timeline is confirmed.
