Manchester United’s Biggest Pre-Season Boost Is Getting Their Core Back

Manchester United’s transfer business has dominated headlines this summer, but the club may be about to receive an equally important boost without spending another pound.

Lisandro Martínez, Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford are all expected to rejoin pre-season training later this month as United step up preparations with a training camp in Ireland. Their returns come after extended breaks and careful fitness management following the FIFA World Cup.

On the surface, this is simply good news for Michael Carrick and his coaching staff. Dig a little deeper, and it could have a major influence on how Manchester United begin the new campaign.

Martínez remains one of the team’s most influential defenders. His aggression, ball progression and leadership have often been missing whenever he has been sidelined. Mainoo, meanwhile, has developed into one of United’s most trusted midfielders despite his age, while Rashford returns with plenty to prove after his loan spell at Barcelona ended without a permanent move.

Perhaps the biggest winner is Carrick.

Pre-season is about far more than fitness. It is where tactical ideas are introduced, partnerships are rebuilt and players begin to understand exactly what the manager wants before competitive football returns. Having three senior players back together gives United a better opportunity to build chemistry rather than spending the opening weeks of the Premier League trying to integrate them gradually.

There is also another layer to Rashford’s return.

His future has dominated speculation throughout the summer, but unless a late transfer materialises, he now has an opportunity to remind everyone why he became one of England’s most feared forwards. A strong pre-season could completely change the narrative around him before the season even starts.

United are taking a cautious approach with all three players after minor fitness concerns during the World Cup, choosing long-term availability over rushing them back. That patience reflects lessons learned from previous seasons when repeated injuries disrupted momentum.

Supporters naturally focus on new arrivals during pre-season. Sometimes, however, the biggest boost is simply having your best players available.

If Martínez, Mainoo and Rashford return fully fit and complete a full pre-season programme, Manchester United could begin the new season looking far more settled than many expected just a few weeks ago.
