The Federal Government has clarified that no final decision has been taken to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) iconic khaki uniform with locally made Adire fabric, following widespread public speculation.
The debate began after the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, spoke about ongoing reforms to the NYSC during a television interview, where he mentioned Adire and Ankara as examples of proposals being considered. Many media reports interpreted the comments to mean that the government had approved Adire as the corps members’ new official uniform.
However, the minister later issued a clarification, stressing that his remarks had been misunderstood. He explained that Adire and Ankara were merely among several ideas presented during stakeholder consultations and that no fabric or design has been approved.
According to Olawande, the government is still evaluating all proposals, with any eventual decision expected to consider factors such as durability, professionalism, national identity, cost-effectiveness and functionality.
He added that broader NYSC reforms remain the priority and urged Nigerians not to allow the uniform debate to overshadow plans aimed at improving youth empowerment, employability and national development.
The clarification comes after the proposed switch generated mixed reactions across social media. While some Nigerians welcomed the idea of promoting indigenous textiles and supporting local manufacturers, others questioned whether changing the uniform should be a priority amid concerns over unemployment, security and the welfare of corps members.
For now, prospective and serving corps members will continue wearing the traditional khaki uniform, with the government insisting that discussions on any possible redesign remain ongoing and no final approval has been granted.
