A new three-week bootcamp in Enugu is taking a different approach to youth training: less classroom theory, more building things that actually work.
Educare founder Alex Onyia has launched the program for 40 young people, with participants learning drone construction, robotics, artificial intelligence and practical trades including welding and automobile mechanics. The program is also bringing in 20-year-old Nigerian drone builder Kayode Williams, who recently arrived in Enugu to teach young learners how to build real drones from scratch.
That sounds impressive, but the bigger question is whether a short bootcamp can actually produce the kind of workforce Nigeria needs. It can but only if the training continues after the cameras leave.
The strongest part of the initiative is its focus on practical problem-solving. Instead of simply teaching students what a drone is or explaining robotics concepts, participants are expected to work with the technology itself.
That distinction matters. Nigeria does not necessarily have a shortage of young people interested in technology. It has a shortage of opportunities for many of those young people to turn interest into technical ability, and technical ability into income.
The organizers are reportedly looking beyond education too. The program is exploring low-cost drones that could eventually be useful for security and emergency logistics, including transporting medicines and other supplies.
That gives the training a potentially bigger purpose: creating people who can build solutions for Nigerian problems rather than simply becoming users of imported technology.
And Enugu is becoming an interesting place to test that idea. The state has been pushing digital and technical infrastructure, while discussions around drones and robotics are increasingly entering Nigeria’s education and industrial conversations.
But 40 trainees cannot transform a workforce. The real test will be what happens six months or three years from now.
Do participants continue building? Can they access equipment? Can they find mentors? Can they turn prototypes into businesses? Can local companies employ them? Can the government and private sector create an ecosystem around these skills?
If the answer is yes, the bootcamp could become a model worth replicating across Nigerian states.
If the answer is no, it risks becoming another inspiring training program where participants receive certificates, take pictures and return to an economy that gives them nowhere to apply what they learned.
That is why the most important thing about this initiative isn’t the number 40. It is whether those 40 young people become the first generation of a much larger pipeline of Nigerian engineers, technicians, robotics developers and drone builders.
Training people is useful. Building an ecosystem where those skills can survive is the real challenge.
