Cuba has been plunged into another nationwide blackout after the collapse of its national electricity grid, deepening an energy crisis driven by critically low fuel supplies and an aging power infrastructure. The outage affected nearly the entire island, disrupting electricity for around 10 million people and marking yet another major grid failure in recent days.
According to Cuban authorities, the latest collapse was triggered by a failure at a power plant that caused a complete disconnection of the national grid. Officials have begun restoring electricity through a system of isolated “micro-grids” to prioritise essential services such as hospitals, water treatment facilities and food production, though full restoration is expected to take time.
The crisis has been compounded by severe fuel shortages. Cuba produces only a fraction of the fuel it needs and has struggled to secure imports, leading to prolonged power cuts, suspended public transport, cancelled surgeries and growing public frustration. The repeated outages have intensified pressure on the government as residents grapple with worsening living conditions and sporadic protests over the lack of electricity and basic services.
