Nigerian comedian and streamer Carter Efe has responded defiantly after Babcock University threatened legal action over a fake academic certificate linked to him, escalating a controversy that has dominated Nigerian social media.
The dispute began after Carter Efe shared what he claimed was proof of graduating from Babcock University with a “First Class Upper” degree in Biochemistry. The university swiftly dismissed the document as fraudulent, clarifying that it does not recognise any academic classification called “First Class Upper” and does not issue honorary certificates for undergraduate academic performance. The institution also announced plans to pursue legal action against those responsible for producing and circulating the document.
Reacting during a livestream with fellow content creators, Carter Efe appeared unfazed by the university’s warning. Mocking the situation, he claimed Babcock would not be able to see him unless they first paid ₦100,000 as a “ticket fee,” adding that he and his team would soon visit the campus. His comments quickly went viral, with many viewers interpreting them as satire rather than a serious response.
The controversy has divided public opinion online. Some fans defended the comedian, arguing that the certificate saga was simply another example of his trademark humour and exaggerated online persona. Others criticised his response, saying the matter had gone beyond comedy now that the university had publicly denied the document and threatened legal proceedings.
Babcock University has maintained that anyone found forging, presenting or circulating fake academic credentials could face civil and criminal consequences. As of now, Carter Efe has not withdrawn his remarks, while the university has yet to announce whether formal legal proceedings have commenced.
