Seven-time African champions Egypt could not claim a historical victory over Belgium in their first game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday evening as both sides settled for a 1-1 draw in their Group G clash, reports Newslegend.
Egypt were coasting to a first ever victory in the World Cup tournament until a late equaliser in the Group G match in Seattle
The Pharaohs went ahead in the 21st minute through Al Ahly midfielder Emam Ashour, who let fly a 20-yard strike into the bottom corner past the experienced Thibaut Courtois.
However Thomas Meunier’s low cross was turned into his own net by Egypt defender Mohamed Hany in the 66th minute, under pressure from second half substitute Romelu Lukaku.
